Injured Wildlife

Red-tailed Hawk

You never know when you may have to help an injured animal. Perhaps it's a bird that has just flown into a window or become tangled in fishing line. You might even happen upon a deer or a raccoon that has just been struck by a car. Whatever the situation, you may want to lend a helping hand. However, you must first recognize that the animal will not understand that you are trying to help it and will instinctually react out of fear and pain. The best thing you can do is to eliminate stressors and alleviate shock. Following are ways to assess such a situation and steps to take when action is needed.

Even though it is tempting to take an animal and nurse it back to health, please remember that there are many federal and state laws and rules against keeping wildlife.
